Privacy Policy

The Short Version
ScanWow has no account and no sign-up. Scanning and text recognition run on your device, and your scans are not stored on our servers. A page only leaves your device when you choose to: when you tap Magic Enhance on it, back it up to your own iCloud, share or export it, or send it to your own server with Secure API Export. The app has no ads and does no tracking. From version 3.0.5 it sends a few anonymous counts (like "a scan was made") with no device ID, so we can see how many people get through setup and the Pro screen.
Overview
ScanWow ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to transparency about how we handle your data. This Privacy Policy explains what stays on your device, what the app sends and why, who helps us run it, and your choices. It applies to the ScanWow app for iPhone and iPad and to this website.
What Stays on Your Device
- Your scans: the page images you capture or import
- Recognized text: the text ScanWow reads from your pages
- Your library: scan names, dates, and your settings
- Search: searching inside your scans runs entirely on your device
We do not have a copy of any of this. Text recognition runs on your device and sends nothing to us. It works without an internet connection, except that a few languages may need to download the backup text reader and its language data from jsDelivr, a public download server, when you first use them. No page or text is sent; like any server, jsDelivr sees your device's IP address.
Magic Enhance (Optional AI Cleanup)
Magic Enhance runs only when you tap it on a page. Nothing is sent automatically. When you tap it:
- A smaller copy of that page image (a JPEG, at most 1024 pixels on its longest side) is sent over HTTPS to ScanWow's server
- Our server passes the image to Anthropic Claude (or to Google Gemini as a backup if Claude is unavailable), which reads the text, and the cleaned-up text comes back to your device
- We do not store the page image or its text: it is processed in memory and discarded
- The request includes a random device ID that the app creates on your device. We use it to keep track of your Magic Enhance credit balance and daily use. It does not include your name, email, or Apple Account.
Want No Page to Leave Your Device?
Turn off Magic Cloud in Settings. Magic Enhance then cannot send anything, and on-device text recognition keeps working, unlimited. Secure API Export and Automatic iCloud Backup are off unless you turn them on.
Crash Reports
If the app runs into an error, it sends a crash report to ScanWow's server so we can fix the problem. A crash report contains:
- The random device ID described above
- The app version, platform, and basic system details (such as the iOS version)
- Your country, based on your network connection
- The error message and technical details about where the error happened
Crash reports do not include your scans, and they are not linked to your name or email. They are deleted automatically after 30 days.
Anonymous Usage Counts
From version 3.0.5, the app sends a few anonymous counts to ScanWow's server so we can see where people get stuck. They are sent when the app is first opened, when you make your first scan, when the Pro screen is shown, and when you tap to buy or a purchase or restore finishes. Each count contains only:
- The name of the step (for example, "first scan" or "Pro screen shown")
- One fixed word for where the Pro screen was opened from or how a purchase ended (for example, "settings" or "cancelled")
- The app version
Counts do not include the random device ID, your scans, your text, or anything that identifies you. Our server does not store your IP address with them. It keeps only a running total for each step per day, and deletes those totals after about 13 months.
Purchases
ScanWow Pro is a one-time purchase. There is no subscription. Purchases (ScanWow Pro and optional Magic Enhance credit refills) are made through Apple's App Store. Apple handles payment, and we never see your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage purchases and restores. RevenueCat receives your purchase history and an anonymous ID it creates for the app, and we connect that ID to the random device ID so your credits land on the right device.
iCloud Backup (Optional, Pro)
Automatic iCloud Backup is off until you turn it on. When it is on, ScanWow saves a backup of your scans in your own iCloud account, using Apple's iCloud service and Apple's privacy terms. The backup does not pass through our servers, and we cannot see it. You can turn it off at any time in Settings.
Secure API Export (Optional)
Secure API Export is off until you set it up. When you use it, your scans (the PDF, the text, and the images if you choose) go directly from your device to the HTTPS address you enter, using the token you provide. They do not pass through our servers, and we cannot see them. Your token is stored on your device.
Sharing and Exporting
When you share, save, or export a scan (for example to Files, Photos, Mail, or another app), it goes where you send it and is handled under that service's own privacy terms.
Support Requests
If you contact us through our support form, we receive your email address, the topic, the device and iOS version if you add them, and your message. The form is run by Formspree, which delivers your message to our support inbox. We use this only to answer you.
What We Do Not Do
- No account, no sign-up, and no login
- No ads, and no usage tracking tied to you or your device (the app only sends the anonymous counts above)
- No tracking across other companies' apps or websites
- We do not sell or rent your data, and we do not use it for advertising
- The app does not access your contacts or location, and it does not read your photo library except a photo you pick to import
Third-Party Services
ScanWow uses the following third-party services:
- Anthropic Claude: reads the text on pages you send with Magic Enhance
- Google Gemini: backup for Magic Enhance when Claude is unavailable
- RevenueCat: purchase and restore management
- Apple: App Store payments, and iCloud Backup if you turn it on
- Cloudflare: hosts our server and this website
- Formspree: delivers support form messages
- jsDelivr: download server for the backup text reader and language data, used only for a few languages
This Website
This website is hosted on Cloudflare. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page visits. It does not use cookies and does not track you across other websites. If you use the support form, see Support Requests above.
Data Retention
- Magic Enhance pages: not retained. Processed in real time and discarded.
- Crash reports: deleted automatically after 30 days
- Anonymous usage counts: daily totals only, deleted after about 13 months
- Credit balance and daily use: kept, tied to the random device ID, so your Magic Enhance credits are not lost
- Purchase records: kept by Apple and RevenueCat as needed to provide purchases and restores
- Support messages: kept only as long as needed to help you
Your Rights and Choices
- Keep every page on your device: turn off Magic Cloud in Settings, and leave iCloud Backup and Secure API Export off
- Delete your scans: delete scans in the app at any time. Deleting the app removes the scans stored on your device. An iCloud backup stays in your iCloud until you delete it there.
- Turn off iCloud Backup: anytime in Settings
- Access or delete data we hold: contact us and we will help. Because ScanWow has no accounts, we may ask for details that help us find the right records.
Data Security
Everything the app sends and downloads (Magic Enhance pages, crash reports, purchase information, and the backup text reader) travels over encrypted HTTPS. Our server runs on Cloudflare's secure infrastructure. Magic Enhance page images are processed in memory and not written to storage.
Children's Privacy
ScanWow is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date.
